WhatsApp Business green tick verification: it is blue now, and these are the rules

WhatsApp Business green tick verification is three separate approvals, not one. Meta's five conditions, why a request is rejected, and when you can reapply.

Ask a shop owner what they want from WhatsApp and many say "the green tick". Dig a little and they mean different things. One wants Meta to confirm the company is real. One wants the business name to show at the top of the chat. One wants customers to stop wondering whether the number is a scam.

This post pulls those apart, because WhatsApp Business green tick verification is not one step. It is three approvals, each with its own screen, its own status and its own way of failing. Everything below comes from Meta's own developer pages, not from vendors selling a service. At the end we also list the claims that circulate online and that Meta's page never makes.

First: the green tick is blue now

People still say green tick. What the number shows today, per Meta, is a blue checkmark beside the name. Meta calls the status an Official Business Account, or OBA. If you searched "green tick" or "blue tick", it is the same thing, and this post uses both so you can find it.

Three approvals people call "verification"

What it is Where you do it What you get
Business verification Meta checks the company is real Business portfolio settings A condition for the tick, and a higher message limit
Display name approval Meta reviews the name shown for the number WhatsApp Manager The name can appear at the top of chats
Official Business Account Blue checkmark beside the name WhatsApp Manager, Profile tab The number appears in WhatsApp search

The first two are conditions for the third. Do not ask for the tick before they are done.

The five conditions Meta sets for the tick

Meta's Official Business Accounts page says all of these must hold:

  1. The business complies with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy.
  2. It has been registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days.
  3. The business portfolio that owns the number is verified (Business Verification).
  4. The number has two-step verification enabled.
  5. The number's display name has been approved.

Meta also states that OBA status is not granted to employees, test accounts or numbers on the WhatsApp Business app. So you must be on the API first. If the app versus API difference is not clear yet, read WhatsApp API or the WhatsApp Business app.

Step 1: business verification

This is usually the slowest part, because a person reviews it. Meta lists accepted documents in a Help Center article ("Upload official documents to verify your business"). The Help Center page did not load its body for us while writing this, so we will not invent a document list. Open it yourself and prepare the papers before you start.

What we can say from practice:

  • Names match exactly. The company name on the commercial registration, in your Meta account, on your website and in your WhatsApp profile. A difference in one letter, or Arabic versus English, costs days.
  • The person submitting has authority to act for the company, not an employee on a personal account.
  • Do not retry blindly. Read the reason, fix it, then resubmit.

One thing about platforms: Meta has a track called partner-led business verification, but only for approved Select or Premier Solution Partners, and Meta says decisions there come in minutes rather than days. So do not assume any platform can speed up your verification. Ask directly: "do you offer that track?" The partner types are explained in what a Meta Tech Provider is.

Verification helps even if you never want the tick

Per Meta's messaging limits page, a new business portfolio starts at 250 unique recipients per rolling 24 hours outside the customer service window. It can rise to 2,000 by one of three paths: verify the business, have a partner verify it, or deliver 2,000 template messages to unique numbers in 30 days with high template quality. The limit is set per business portfolio, shared by every number in it. So verification is usually the first thing to do whether or not you want the tick.

Step 2: two-step verification

The easiest condition and the most forgotten. You set a 6-digit PIN on the number. Meta documents no way to disable it afterwards, so store the PIN where the company holds it, not one employee. You need it the day you move the number to another platform. If it is lost, WhatsApp Manager lets you change it: the number's settings, Two-step verification, Change PIN.

Step 3: display name approval

There is no "approve my name" button. Per Meta's display names page, the name is verified automatically when your number reaches a higher messaging limit. The result is APPROVED or a rejection, where the number's name_status becomes DECLINED. You get a Meta Business Suite notification and a phone_number_name_update webhook.

If it is rejected:

  • Read the display name guidelines and edit the name.
  • Or appeal through Developer Support.
  • You can change the name 10 times per 30 days. After an approved change you have 14 days to re-register the number, or the name goes back to review.
  • Note that once the number has OBA status, changing its name goes through direct support, not the normal screen. Choose the name carefully at the start.

Also: even an approved name can be overridden. If a WhatsApp user edits your profile name on their own phone, they see the name they typed.

Step 4: asking for the tick

When the five conditions hold:

  1. Open WhatsApp Manager, then Overview.
  2. Click the business number.
  3. Enable two-step verification if it is not on yet.
  4. Go to Phone numbers, Profile, Official business account, and click Submit Request.

If you meet the conditions and do not see the option, Meta says to contact your Meta point of contact, your Solution Provider's support, or Meta Support.

Through the API you can read the status from the official_business_account field on the number. Meta's example shows oba_status as NOT_STARTED, and the page lists no other values, so do not build logic around guesses.

If the request is rejected

Meta says a rejection means the account does not meet the eligibility requirements "at this time". It is not a verdict on your business forever.

  • You must wait 30 days before submitting again.
  • You can still edit your business profile at any time: picture, email, website, description.
  • Before reapplying, walk the five conditions in order and make sure each one is really true, for example a display name not yet approved, or fewer than 30 days on the platform.

What Meta's page does not say

Search the topic and you will meet guides saying you need "3 to 5 press articles", or "10,000 Facebook likes", or "1,000 messages a day". The Meta page we used mentions none of them. It lists five conditions. We are not claiming Meta ignores your public profile internally, because we do not know. We are saying Meta has not published it, so do not plan around a number from someone's blog.

The same goes for timing. We found no official review time for the tick, and other guides contradict each other, sometimes inside the same article. Assume it takes time and start early.

What the tick actually does

Per Meta, a number without OBA status does not appear in search results inside WhatsApp. If a user saves it as a contact, the display name does appear in their search results. Meta recommends applying to improve discoverability. That is the documented benefit. Claims that it raises open or click rates have no source we could find, we cannot give you a figure, and we will not tell you that you need it to operate.

Can I use the API without the tick?

Yes. Most small businesses run on the API without OBA, because sending messages and using templates does not require it. What you do need is a verified business so the limit can rise, and an approved display name. The tick is an addition.

FAQ

Is it free?

Meta's page lists no fee for the request. If a platform submits it for you, ask beforehand about any service fee and what it covers.

I am on the WhatsApp Business app. Can I ask for the tick?

No. Meta explicitly excludes app numbers. Move to the API first.

How long does the review take?

We found no official figure, so we will not make one up. For partner-led business verification by Select or Premier partners, Meta says the average is five minutes and can take several hours, but that applies to a specific class of provider.

The option is missing in my account. What now?

Check the five conditions first. If all hold, contact the support of the platform you registered through, or Meta Support, as Meta's page says.

How we do it

At Kerneltics we follow the order above: business verification first, then two-step verification, then the display name, then the tick request if it helps your business. Our platform K-Message connects your own number through Embedded Signup, so the account and the number stay in your name, and Kerneltics is a Meta-approved Tech Provider. The account setup from zero is in the setup guide, and the service page is WhatsApp API. If you want us to look at where your business stands and tell you where to start, book a free 30 minute session.
